Born and raised in Northumberland, Darren began his academic journey back in 1995 with an Honours degree in English & Philosophy before completing a PGCE at Newcastle University.
A successful career in education ensued, both as an advanced skills teacher & HOD of English & Drama, & as an educational consultant for teacher training.
Over a decade later, Darren began to question the value of academic success as measured by targets as opposed to emotional wellbeing & development.
During this time a number of personal crises left Darren battling addiction & compulsive behaviour & eventually led to time spent in rehabilitation & recovery facilities.
Though this period of his life was incredibly difficult, Darren came to recognise the importance of facing his issues. With the support of his family & therapy, this not only led to a newfound sense of wellbeing & confidence in his own skin, but also guided him towards his chosen vocation.
As a direct consequence of this personal journey of recovery & the psychotherapy that had helped him along the way, Darren made the move to re-train as a psychologist.
Motivated both by a wish to help others, in the way that he himself had been helped & to gain a greater understanding of human behaviour & the inherent power of psychotherapy, in 2011 Darren enrolled on a Masters degree in psychology. Immediately after achieving this qualification, he began his specialist training in psychological therapies, qualifying as a doctor of counselling psychology in 2017.
During the doctorate programme, Darren gained valuable experience in assessment, formulation & treatment planning. He’s worked in the charitable, NHS & private sectors effectively supporting clients to overcome a range of emotional health problems such as anxiety, depression, obsessional behaviours, addiction, PTSD & self esteem issues.
In conjunction with this clinical work, Darren is an active academic, working as a psychology lecturer & contributing to research, particularly in the area of addiction treatment & recovery.
Darren is a fully qualified counselling psychologist, registered with the HCPC & chartered with the BPS. He works therapeutically with young people, adults & couples.
Darren has worked across NHS, university & charity sectors & over the years has supported his clients to overcome many complex emotional health issues.
Darren has a particular interest in helping people in their recovery from addictions & both his doctoral & post-doctoral research has focused upon this arena.
As a psychologist trained in the three main schools of therapy (person centred, psychodynamic & CBT), Darren works integratively, always seeking to tailor your therapy to your most pressing needs.
He has a deep, empathic understanding of what it is to be human & with warmth, humour & humility he will support you to better understand yourself & your situation, so you can find your way forward.
Darren says …
“Taking the first steps to get help can be daunting. This is why I always offer therapy in an emotionally supportive and empathetic manner to help you to achieve the changes that you are looking for. As a psychologist I work with the processes of change; though change is never easy, it’s always worthwhile.
I’m fully trained in a diverse range of therapies. This means when we first meet for your consultation, we can consider which approaches may be the best fit for you & therefore the most effective, ensuring you a unique & individualised treatment plan.
This is a journey that we will embark upon together & I will be there to support you with the challenges along the way. The struggles that I have faced in my own life have taught me just how important feeling connected with others is in building & maintaining our emotional wellbeing. It is this connectedness that is at the heart of the therapy that I’ll offer you.”
