Joshua has a long held interest in personal growth & the value of self-exploration. Having always had a strong social conscience & a desire to help others, on completing his A levels Joshua took some time out to volunteer overseas, spending a year working in orphanages in Nepal & Vietnam.
Having survived both the immense culture shock & a nasty bout of dysentery, Joshua continued on his travels. He went on to volunteer on organic farms across Europe, where he explored his growing interest in sustainable living & permaculture.
On returing to the UK, Joshua gained his first experience of social care in a residential home for the elderly. Here he spent two years working as a care assistant, supporting people who were in the advanced stages of Alzheimers disease.
A work life balance that leans much more towards the side of life, has always been a priority for Joshua & this goal has informed his varied work experience.
Joshua has worked in hospital administration as a temp, as a postman & as a volunteer coordinator at the Blaeneinion permaculture project in Wales, where he helped to plant 10,000 trees.
During his time in Wales, Joshua was part of a small intentional community that sought to resolve their difficulties using nonviolent communication. It was here that he first discovered the writings of Carl Rogers & became interested in training as a therapist.
Once back in his native North East, Joshua sought to use this learning to help others by establishing both a supportive Men’s Circle & a monthly practice group that explored the principles & application of nonviolence & empathy.
In 2015, Joshua began his counselling training at the Northern Guild. Since this time he has worked in both a GP service as a primary care counsellor & at The Toby Henderson Trust, supporting clients whose lives have been touched by autism.
He continues to prioritise personal & professional development through regular Buddhist practice, supervision & self-reflection. Joshua also has a keen interest in ecotherapy & intends to offer “walking and talking” ecotherapy in his own private practice.
Joshua is a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor, whose core training is in Transactional Analysis. He also draws upon creative therapies, attachment theory & Gestalt techniques to support his clients to get to the heart of their issues & to overcome any internal blocks on progress.
Joshua works both relationally & cognitively, employing the TA framework to help you to understand why you feel as you feel & do what you do, so that any changes required can be brought about compassionately.
He is warm & gentle in his nature & has an inner calm that is infectious. With Joshua you can be sure that you’ll be met with truly unconditional positive regard, compassion & understanding.
“As human beings we all face difficulties at times & find ourselves confused, upset, angry, anxious, conflicted or just stuck. When the hard times hit, the presence & understanding of another person can really help.
I will meet you with care & compassion. Together we will explore the roots of your troubles & find the path that suits you to work through them. You will have space to tell your story, explore your experience in the present moment, & consider both your past & what you want from your future.
Our time together will sometimes also involve being with painful feelings, taking some steps outside of your comfort zone, & revisiting troubling memories; but through this work I trust that you will come to find more enjoyment & meaning in life.”
