Sam Carney

Biography

Sam started her career at university where she completed a BSc Honours degree in Applied Psychology.

During her studies, she spent two years volunteering at a local charity which supports young people who have been affected by sexual abuse. As well as this, she was a university peer support mentor, giving emotional and practical support to other university students through 1:1 sessions. It was through this experience that she fell in love with the idea of becoming a counsellor. After graduation, Sam returned home to begin her psychotherapeutic counselling training with The Northern Guild.

Sam worked as a counsellor both in the NHS and charitable sector during her training. She gained extensive experience of offering both short term & long term therapy to clients who were struggling with a wide range of issues such as (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, bereavement, stress, relationship difficulties, trauma and abuse.

Through her charitable work both throughout training and beyond, Sam also gained extensive experience of supporting individuals diagnosed as autistic and ADHD, as well as supporting their families.

She also has a huge passion for working with people impacted by pre or post natal depression and anxiety and supporting new parents, as well as supporting people going through fertility struggles or loss through termination or miscarriage.

Sam now continues her counselling work through private practice and has worked with a variety of different issues over the years and continues to focus on professional development through regular CPD.

She is currently working towards accreditation with the BACP and is a registered member.

My aim as your therapist is to work right alongside you, guiding you on your journey and really hearing and understanding your story. I believe it’s so important to find a therapist you connect with, feel comfortable with and can trust.

It’s helpful to work together to create a “coping toolkit” with practical strategies you can use when difficult times arise, as well as talking therapy, where we can really dive into what may be going on for you and try to find ways to understand yourself and what’s happening in your life.

In a safe & non-judgemental space we will explore your thoughts & feelings together. I’ll celebrate your successes with you and support you when times are tough.

Life can be so challenging at times, together we’ll seek to make it more manageable”

Sam & the rest of the team look forward to welcoming you to The Clearing
