What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) therapy is an integrative approach, originally developed in the 1980s to help people to overcome psychological trauma.
The premise is that the distress & negative feelings that are associated with traumatic memories can be soothed without you having to delve into or even share the specifics of the trauma.
Instead your own rapid eye movements are used to support you to process the traumatic event in the deeper levels of your psyche.
As you follow your therapist’s hand with your eyes, back & forth, in a rhythmic, pendulum like motion, you will be asked to hold the traumatic memories in mind & be invited to let go of the feelings that no longer serve you. In this way negative thoughts & feelings are replaced with positive ones & the traumatic event becomes less raw.
Although theorists still do not understand why this process works, it is clear that it does & there is a growing body of research that confirms how successful EMDR can be in treating trauma & PTSD.
Why choose EMDR?
Our EMDR therapists predominantly use this technique to support clients who are struggling to overcome traumatic life events.
It is recommended for anyone who would prefer a less talking based approach. The sharing of your past experiences will be minimal & is certainly not essential to achieving relief.
The EMDR process is brief (usually encompassing 4 to 10 sessions) & the sessions are very structured.
So if you’re looking for a more directive approach & a fast resolution to the issues you’re experiencing, EMDR could well be for you.
