  1. How we can help

EMDR for Trauma

Trauma can show up in many different ways, from feeling constantly on edge to totally shut down. We might experience obvious sudden intrusive memories, or avoidance of triggers, or simply have a sense that something difficult from the past is still affecting us. At The Clearing, we offer EMDR for adults who feel ready to address PTSD and symptoms of trauma.

How trauma can manifest

Trauma isn’t always obvious. It can show up through how you feel day to day, or in repeating patterns that are hard to shift. You might recognise some of the following:

  • Feeling anxious, on edge, or hyper-alert
  • Emotional numbness or shutting down
  • Intrusive thoughts or memories
  • Strong emotional reactions that feel difficult to manage
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe
  • Avoiding certain situations or reminders
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
  • Weighed down by guilt, shame or blame

You don’t need to relate to all of these for support to be helpful.

How EMDR for trauma can help

Trauma therapy isn’t about rushing into the past or reliving difficult experiences. It’s about helping you feel safer, more stable, and better able to understand what’s happening in your mind and body.

Create a sense of safety

Work in a way that prioritises emotional safety, stability, and trust.

Target the root

Rewire the neurological root of the trauma without exploring the event in detail

Reprocess and find relief

Replace negative thoughts and emotional responses with adaptive, positive ones

EMDR for trauma

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that can help the brain process distressing memories more effectively.

At The Clearing, EMDR is offered where it is clinically appropriate and safe to do so. Before beginning EMDR, an assessment is always carried out to ensure this approach is suitable for you.

EMDR is not appropriate for everyone, and in some cases a different therapeutic approach may be recommended instead.
