  1. How we can help

Trauma

Trauma can show up in many different ways – from feeling constantly on edge, to emotional shutdown, intrusive memories, or a sense that something from the past is still affecting the present. At The Clearing, we offer trauma-informed therapy for adults who feel ready to gently explore and work through difficult experiences, at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

Find the right therapist for you

How trauma can show up

  • Feeling anxious, on edge, or hyper-alert
  • Emotional numbness or shutdown
  • Intrusive thoughts or memories
  • Heightened emotional reactions that feel hard to control
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe
  • Avoiding certain situations or reminders
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
  • Negative thoughts about yourself & the world, or excessive guilt and shame

You don’t need to identify as having “trauma” to find this support helpful.

How trauma-focused therapy can help

Trauma therapy isn’t about diving into the past or forcing yourself to relive difficult experiences. It’s about helping you feel safer, more stable, and better able to understand what’s happening in your mind and body.

Create a sense of safety

Work in a way that prioritises emotional safety, stability, and trust.

Understand your responses

Make sense of how past experiences may still be affecting you now.

Process experiences at your pace

Gently work through difficult memories or emotions when it feels right for you to do so.

Trauma counselling

Counselling for trauma will support you to start gently exploring the traumatic experiences, how you've made sense of them and how they are continuing to affect you today.

Trauma isn’t always obvious. It can show up through how you feel day to day, or in more subtle repeating patterns that are hard to shift. We might experience obvious sudden intrusive memories, or avoidance of triggers, or simply have a sense that something difficult from the past is still casting a shadow over us.

In therapy you'll have a safe space where you can gradually unpick the ripple effect of these traumatic events, heal the wounds they've left behind and ultimately take back control of your life.
